How to search what was said across all your footage

To search what was said across all your footage, transcribe every clip and index the transcripts in one library that links back to timecode. Whisper transcribes for free but leaves you with separate files. Descript and Premiere work per project. Jumper transcribes locally and searches words and phrases across every project, inside your editing app.

Getting a transcript is easy. Finding one line in hundreds of hours of footage, and opening it at the right timecode in your NLE, is harder. For that you need transcripts of every clip in one searchable index that links back to the source.

Whisper

Whisper is a free, open-source speech model that runs on your computer:

whisper interview.mp4 --model medium --output_format srt

It’s the right tool when you need a transcript or subtitles. It doesn’t give you a library: each clip gets its own text file, with no search across them and no link back into your NLE unless you build that yourself.

Descript

Descript lets you edit video by editing its transcript, which works well for podcasts and talking-head pieces you’ll finish in Descript. It’s less useful for an archive, because media is uploaded to Descript’s cloud and search works one project at a time. See Jumper vs Descript.

Your NLE’s own transcripts

Premiere, Resolve Studio, and Final Cut can all transcribe footage and search the open project. Final Cut’s transcript search works in U.S. English. If all your interviews are in one project, start there. None of them search other projects or drives.

Jumper

Jumper’s speech search transcribes on your computer and searches every analyzed clip, across projects and drives:

  1. Analyze the clips or folders. Transcription runs locally.
  2. Search for a word or phrase across all analyzed media.
  3. Open the hit at its timecode in the Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve, or Avid plugin, or in the standalone app.

From there, the Script Editor lets you read the full transcript and send the lines you want to the timeline.

Finding themes and concepts

Speech search matches words and phrases. It won’t find “funding” when the person said “money.” For themes and concepts, connect an AI agent like Claude through Jumper’s MCP server. It can run searches, read the transcripts and summaries Jumper creates, and pull the moments you’re after. See how to automate video editing with AI.

Tips

  • If a search comes up empty, try the words the person would actually use.
  • Try names and acronyms in more than one form, like “WHO” and “W.H.O.”
  • Check the supported languages on the speech search page before the shoot.
  • Read the line in context before you use it. Transcripts make mistakes, especially on noisy audio.

FAQ

Can I search spoken words across many video files at once?

Yes, if all the transcripts are in one index. Jumper transcribes your footage locally, searches words and phrases across every analyzed clip, and opens the hit at its timecode in your NLE. Whisper, Descript, and NLE transcripts each work one file or one project at a time.

Is Whisper good enough for searching interviews?

Whisper is good for transcribing interviews for free on your own computer. It isn't a search tool. You get one transcript file per clip, with no search across them and no link back to your NLE.

Does Descript work for large footage archives?

Not very well. Descript is built for editing one piece by editing its transcript. Media is uploaded to Descript's cloud, and search works inside one project at a time.

Can I transcribe and search footage without uploading it?

Yes. Whisper and Jumper both transcribe on your computer, and Jumper keeps the transcripts on your machine when it searches them.

Can I search by topic instead of exact words?

Not with transcript search alone. Jumper's speech search, like NLE transcript search, matches words and phrases. For themes and concepts, connect an AI agent through Jumper's MCP server. It can run searches and read the transcripts and summaries Jumper creates to find what you mean.

Which languages are supported?

It depends on the tool. Jumper lists its supported languages on the speech search page. Check each tool's list before you promise a client a language.
